PAPER
A complete selection of index paper stocks are available in various weights. Samples are available.
Index tabs should be made with substantial weight stock. This section is very important if the tabs are NOT going to be Mylar coated. Without Mylar coating the tab will soon curl or dog-ear. 100# white tag with a thickness of .0075 is the standard. Other paper up to a thickness of .012 can be used.
NOTE: High gloss paper or very textured papers will not allow for a good bond and the Mylar can be picked off.
THE PROCESS:
Index tabs are printed on paper with all of the positions in a row at once. If there are 7 tabs in a row, the sheet is printed with all 7 titles at once. In the die cutting process, only the desired tab is left and the other titles are cut away. Doing this lets us make fewer plates and run higher quantities with one set up. It is also important to know if there is printing on the main portion of the sheet, called body copy. If there is body copy, a plate will be needed for every different body copy and/or color.
After the paper is printed, it is taken to the die cutter. This machine has cutting dies, which are on a track that can be adjusted for many positions. The sheets are die cut, leaving the paper in the shape of an index tab, with or without
Mylar.
